Women’s Day Off

On the 24th of October 1975, 30.000 Icelandic women took the day off to demand equal pay. This year, women are walking out of their jobs at 14.38 (2.38 pm). Why at that time? Because women still get paid around 20% less than men when all other variables have been taken in consideration. Are we 20% less worthy? Hell no!

I’ve had this piece for graffiti for quite some time now. It’s knit by my mom but she wasn’t happy with it and was going to throw it away. No way mom – it’s graffiti material! So I took it under my wing and have been waiting for the perfect occasion.

Today – when Icelandic women walk out of their jobs at 14.38 was the perfect timing. It was also a great opportunity to talk about equality and art in the public space with my 4 year old son. Together we went out in the pouring rain to make art.

Three is the magic number…

We spent last New Year’s eve at my husband’s sister where the family gathered. Great company, great food, a bonfire and fireworks.

That evening I told my husband: “Your sister is pregnant!”  I just saw it.

So it was no surprise when she called us one Sunday in the beginning of 2015 and told us she was pregnant. The surprise came right after that.

Wait… WHAT?!

Triplets? Like one, two, three? Babies? On their way?

 

So I started crocheting!  And what more fitting for three little babies than Call the midwife inspired baby blankets. I mean, if there is ever a time to call a midwife…

I also did three octopuses – Bläckfiskar.

The crochet octopus (Bläckfisk) is originated in Sweden where groups of crocheters make them and give to NICUs around the country. The octopus gives the premature baby security and the long twisty arms remind of the umbilical cord and the time in the womb.

The Husband Sweater

Last x-mas I gave my husband yarn for a sweater and a promise to put his sweater as my first priority. Now at the end of February it’s finally finished!

I used the Faroese yarn Snældan, both 3ply and 1 ply, one strand of each. I love the yarn and will definitely use it again.

2014!

In the first months of 2014 I promised myself to write down everything I’d craft in the year and make a fancy list of if by the end of the year. I made a list of almost everything I did and tried to put it all up on Ravelry with photos. However, some pairs of socks and mittens were missed by the camera and it’s not a complete list for the year as I’m definitely forgetting something…

So here it is, in no particular order:

We need to save the Icelandic Goat!

Me and Úa

This is me and Úa, my foster goat. She lives at Háafell farm in Iceland. The Icelandic Goat is in danger. There are less than 820 Icelandic goats left on the Earth and in September nearly 400 of them will be slaughtered. Why? The Háafell farm, the only surviving commercial goat farm in Iceland, will be put up for an auction.

There is a group of great people trying to save the Icelandic Goat from extiction. Check out the campaign on IndieGogo and help Save the Icelandic Goat from Extinction.

Hello world!

It’s almost July and we have not seen the summer here in Reykjavík, Iceland. We did have a good spring though so I’m not complaining over the weather… yet ;)

This spring, on the 24th of March me and my husband became parents to a beautiful baby girl whom we named Urður. Here is a photo of her on her way home from the hospital.

I just finished this blanket for the wee one, due in March. It took me days to find THE pattern but I found it! It was my first crochet square project and I really enjoyed it.

Well hello 2014!

I love doing lists of all kinds of things and I got super inspired by a list of FO’s made by my friend Linda. I started my own but I felt overwhelmed so I stopped and promised myself to make my “crafted in 2014” list as I go…

However, I love looking back. On January 1st 2013 I wrote:

“What a year 2012 was! The highlight was without a doubt giving birth to my first, Draupnir, and get to know him. He’s a fantastic little boy, charming and happy. I can’t wait to see what 2013 holds for my little family.”

Well…2013 was a blast! Watching my son grow and learn is amazing and he is always the same charming happy boy. In 2013 it was clear that the little family was growing bigger and in 2014 we’re having a baby girl! Exciting times ahead!

In the blog post from January 1st 2013 I also shared some crafty resolutions with you, let’s see how I did:

Crafty resolutions for 2013 – How did I do?

1. Finish and publish a pattern that I’m working on at the moment. – CHECK! This year I published my Mia Baby Blanket and my Jasmin socks! :)

2. Design and publish a pattern for a children sweater (at least one!) – NOT CHECK!  However, I have few design and I’m going to try to make it a whole book!

3. Design and knit or crochet mittens, hats and socks for Draupnir as he grows. – CHECK! Mostly hats though :)

4. Knit myself something really beautiful and nice! – CHECK! I crochet myself a shawl and a cowl/cap.

So bring on 2014 with all its glory – it’s going to be super!

Stitching through grief

My grandmother passed away in  February. She was a brilliant and strong woman. When I was younger I always had hand knitted mittens and socks from both of my grandmothers and they were a great inspiration for me as a knitter.

The night she died we knew it was coming. I was too restless to work on my knitting so I picked up a crochet hook and started crocheting a classic granny square. I had never made one before but I knew how to do it so the square came pretty easily. As I sat there crocheting one square after the other I decided that I would put up a yarnstorm in the memory of my loving grandmother. And so I did.

My grandmother lived in this house since the middle of last century. This is where she raised her children and had her most joyful and hardest times. In her loving memory, I left these granny squares on her fence.

2013!

Happy new year!

What a year 2012 was! The highlight was without a doubt giving birth to my first, Draupnir, and get to know him. He’s a fantastic little boy, charming and happy. I can’t wait to see what 2013 holds for my little family.

Knitting-wise I knit my son a Royal blanket, that was my biggest knit this year. I also knit him a sweater, hat and socks. I crochet more than I have done in the previous years and I have found out that amigurumi is something I really like. This year I knit the first garment ever for my husband: A hat! He loved it so that inspires me to maybe knit something more for him. But I don’t think I’ll be going down the road of a husband-sweater…

So lets look at my knitting resolutions for 2012:

1. Knit socks! – CHECK!

2. Spin more! – Not so much…

3. Knit more! – CHECK!

4. Design more! – CHECK!

5. Yarnstorm more! – CHECK, CHECK, CHECK!

I think I did pretty good in 2012 ;)  I also published my first patterns on Ravelry, you can see them here.
